Successful implementation of a new online platform, that improves UvA’s ability to inform and involve their students and teachers.
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the largest university in the Netherlands with over 30,000 students divided over seven faculties. To communicate online with their students and teachers, the university uses the UvAWeb, consisting of several websites. In 2012, the university launched a new version of this external, online platform. At the time, the platform ran on its own in-house developed CMS that was based on Coldfusion. Coldfusion is a web-scripting technology that was popular in the ‘90s, but the platform’s performance, scalability, and reliability were outmatched by other Java-based technologies.
The UvA decided to switch to a new web content management system (Hippo CMS), and at the same time restructured the site with the aim of giving the site a more uniform design and an improved user experience. At the time, the collection consisted of about 200,000 documents of which 40,000 are unique items.
